ISO 3166 codes
ISO 3166 defines the country and subdivision codes used in ISO 20022 addresses: <Ctry> must carry a two-letter ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code (exactly [A-Z]{2}), and <CtrySubDvsn>, where used, must carry an ISO 3166-2 subdivision code such as US-CA or GB-ENG under the CPMI harmonised model.
How ISO 3166 codes works in practice
Codified country values are what make field-level sanctions screening possible: engines match <Ctry> against sanctioned jurisdictions directly instead of pattern-matching free text — the root cause of false positives like "Cuba Street" triggering Cuba alerts. The ISO 3166-2 requirement standardises subdivision naming for uniform downstream parsing.
