pain.001
pain.001 (CustomerCreditTransferInitiation) is the ISO 20022 message a corporate uses to instruct its bank to execute credit transfers; the current production version is pain.001.001.09. In hybrid format its <AdrLine> is capped at two occurrences — versions 3 and 9 allow up to 7 lines only in the legacy unstructured format, which ends on 15 November 2026.
How pain.001 works in practice
Corporates submit pain.001 via host-to-host files, SWIFT FileAct or banking portals. Because validation now happens at the point of entry, the ERP/TMS that generates the file must emit compliant addresses — there is no downstream repair. Vendor patches targeting pain.001 v9 hybrid output are a standard migration milestone.
